Traveling From Nassau to Pig Beach by plane
Traveling from Nassau to Piggy Island is a 30-40min flight to Staniel Cay in Exuma, followed by a 10min boat ride to Pig Beach. Undoubtedly, this option is the fastest one, but also the most expensive. An organized excursion from Nassau usually costs 700-800$. What I love about this option are the marvelous views over Exumas and they alone are worth the money.
The benefit of flying is that you’ll be with the pigs earlier in the day, before all the people who come by boat. This means fewer tourists and greater chance for the pigs to interact with you. You can organize everything by yourself by booking flights and then a boat ride. Easier option is to book this organized excursion:

One of the benefits of swimming with pigs from Exuma is that you can get to Pig Beach very quickly. Thus you’d be spending less time traveling around and more time swimming with the pigs. You’ll also be able to go to the pigs early. On top of all that, Exuma boasts stunning islands and unbelievably clear waters.
Tip: Go to Pig Beach early in the morning, when there are fewer tourists and the swimming pigs of Bahamas will interact with you more.
Traveling from Great Exuma to Pig Beach
If you are staying at Great Exuma, fear not. The island is a bit further away from swimming with the pigs – a 2-hour boat ride. But in my experience most organized tours include many other stops along the way. This makes the journey a lot more enjoyable and interesting and the 2 hours pass by rather quickly.
Great Exuma may not be as close to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas experience as Big Major Cay, I would say it’s better. There are more hotels to stay at and restaurants to dine in. And I also like the beaches more at Great Exuma.

However, it’s best if you book your tour in advance, as the boats may be fully booked. The 3N’s Vacation Services tour is organized by one of the most famous companies for swimming with pigs in the Bahamas and is a great option.
Other than an entry point to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, Staniel Cay has a lot more to offer. Nearby you can explore Thunderball Grotto, a famous cave system featured in James Bond movies. Meeks Patch Island is a small island in the northern part of Eleuthera. It’s famous for its swimming animals, most notably the pigs. But there are also ducks and a turkey! It’s not as busy as other places in the Bahamas. Here, you can swim with the pigs in the Bahamas without lots of people around.

Ship Channel Cay is a small, 3 miles (5km) by 0.3 miles (500m) island. It’s located 30 miles (50km) south-east of Nassau. Other than swimming with the pigs there’s not much to do on the island.
Sure, you can sunbathe on a beach chair or observe the stingrays or iguanas or watch feeding of the sharks but that’s all. There are a few small buildings on the island offering shade, food & refreshments. What I liked is that there are few tourists and it’s very nice and calm.
How to get to Ship Channel Cay:

No Name Cay, Abaco

No Name Cay is also a very small island – half the length of Ship Channel Cay. It’s part of Abaco islands and is very close to Green Turtle Cay and Treasure Cay.
As you might expect, there are very few tourists and it’s very calm. Of course, you can feed and swim with the pigs. Other than that, there’s a small souvenir shop and a bar offering drinks and some food.

Dove Cay is the smallest of all the islands where you can go swimming with pigs in the Bahamas. It’s just 0.3 miles (500m) long and only a few pigs live there. It’s a privately owned island and usually you can go there only with a booked tour.
The nice thing is that there are no tourists there and you can have the pigs all to yourself (and the few goats on the island). But bear in mind that the island is rocky and there’s only a small beach. There are no places to get drinks or relax or any kind of buildings other than a shade for the pigs.

When you look at the list, many items may seem obvious. But believe me, it’s easy to forget about some of those. Or you may not have thought that you may need this or that.
Water Shoes
These are like protective socks for your feet. They shield them from sharp rocks or rough surfaces underwater, letting you explore without worrying about cuts or discomfort.
Food for the swimming pigs
Ensure you bring pig-friendly treats like veggies or fruits to feed the adorable pigs. Remember, their diet doesn’t include just anything, so prepare treats they’ll love! In my experience, pigs will interact with you only if you have food. Usually tour organizers take care of that, but it’s best to ask them beforehand so that you come prepared.
Swimsuit
A no-brainer, but essential! You’ll spend a lot of time in the water. Be it swimming with the pigs, exploring Thunderball Grotto or just snorkeling. So… don’t forget your favorite swimsuit.
Sunscreen
The Bahamian sun can be intense and the swimming pigs tours can be long. Quite often the tour boats have limited shade. So it’s best to apply a lot of sunscreen before the tour. Also make sure to bring enough to reapply, especially after spending time in the water. My advice – choose a water-resistant one for uninterrupted fun with the pigs.
Insect repellent
Keep those pesky bugs away with some bug spray. It’s your shield against any unwelcome critters. And there are plenty of those! After all, the swimming pigs are wild animals and often live on uninhabited islands where mosquitos may thrive.
Phone or camera
Capturing those cute piggy moments is a must! Bring a camera or your phone, but be careful with electronics near water. It’s best if you have an action camera (e.g. GoPro) or waterproof shielding. My best advice – don’t forget to fully charge it beforehand or bring a power bank!
Waterproof phone case

Even though many phones from the last few years are waterproof, you never know what may happen. Moreover, the salt water is corrosive and can damage your phone. Meanwhile waterproof cases or pouches are cheap and do a great job!
Towel & clothes
After your swim, you’ll need something dry to change into. Pack a towel and an extra set of clothes for a comfortable post-swim experience. If you have a waterproof bag (or one that doesn’t absorb water), bring it along and store your items there. During the boat trip there may be a lot of splashes and water drops.
And if the weather forecast is not sunny, get a rain jacket in case you get caught up in a rain. It will also keep you warm if it’s windy.
Cash & Card
Many places and islands that the tours stop at may not accept cards. So make sure you bring cash for any purchases or emergencies. For example, you may have lunch included in your tour, but without the drinks or alcohol. You’ll also need some cash for tipping your tour guide. In my opinion it’s best if you get smaller bills. Usually 50-100$ should be enough.
Goggles
Enhance your underwater vision with goggles. They’ll allow you to explore the beauty beneath the surface when snorkeling or taking underwater photos.
Usually tour organizers will provide you with snorkeling equipment, but ask beforehand. On the other hand I prefer using my own goggles and snorkel, so I always bring mine.
No expensive jewelry
You’ll be spending half or the whole day on the boat, at the beach and in the water. Thus there’s a high chance for you to lose your jewelry.
My advice is to leave those at the hotel. Not only for your swimming with pigs in the Bahamas adventure, but for any other excursion that involves activities like swimming, snorkeling and bumpy travel.

My grandparents had a farm with lots of animals – pigs among them. Thus I had a lot of interaction with them and know how to behave around the swimming pigs. But many tourists don’t. So, follow these guidelines for an enjoyable and safe interaction with these fascinating creatures:
Be respectful
Approach the pigs calmly and avoid making sudden movements or loud noises. Let them come to you if they feel comfortable. Don’t chase them or let alone – ride them. Be kind and remember that they are wild animals and may do unpredictable things.
Don’t hold the piggies
Picking up or carrying the pigs isn’t a good idea. They prefer to move around freely on the sand or in the water. And if you pick up a cute little pig, it may squeal. This can draw the moma-pig’s attention and she may try to protect her little one.
If you want to hold a swimming pig in the Bahamas, only do so if the piggie is really friendly and enjoys your company.
Don’t feed the pigs from your hands
Feeding the pigs directly from your hands might seem appealing, but it’s crucial to avoid this. Their eyesight and coordination are not very good. So they may mistake your fingers for food and try to bite them.
The same applies for any other object that you hold in your hands – like a phone. So keep those objects either in your bag or in front and above the pig’s head, where they can see them.
Feed the pigs only in the Water
To maintain the pigs’ natural habitat and cleanliness, feed them while in the water. But more importantly – do it for the pigs’ safety. If you throw food on the beach, they may ingest too much sand. But sand is not good for them. In the past there were cases where some of the swimming pigs in the Bahamas died because of the sand.
It’s best if you throw the food in the water in front of the pigs when they swim towards you.

The rest of the excursion time is spent traveling and stopping at other destinations. To be honest, I really loved the whole experience. You spend some time with the pigs, you snorkel at Thunderball Grotto, pet some iguanas. I think that the organized tours are really worth it.
Pigs may not swim during your visit
These charming creatures might not always feel like taking a dip. Don’t be disheartened if they prefer lounging on the shore rather than paddling in the water. They are living beings like us. So they may not always be in the mood. There are higher chances to see the pigs swimming if you go to Pig Beach in the morning.
