How much time does the Toro Timemaster save? ›

I figured the Toro Timemaster 30 would expedite my weekly mowing, but I was surprised at the amount of time I saved. With my old trusty 21-inch mower. it took me roughly 90 minutes to mulch my grass. The first time I cut my lawn with the Timemaster 30 it took only 49 minutes… and I bagged the clippings!

Note: The height of cut has changed from a range of 10.2 cm (4 inches) to 2.5 cm (1 inch) to a range of 10.8 cm (4-1/4 inches) to 3.2 cm (1-1/4 inch). Refer to the Operator's Manual for more information on adjusting the Cutting Height.

You want to remove thatch that is right above the soil without tearing it up. A height of about a quarter-inch (6.35 millimeters) above the soil may work -- adjust the blades while they are on a smooth surface. They may need to be slightly higher for delicate grasses. First, mow the grass about half as high as usual.

After dethatching your lawn it is a great time to aerate your lawn. After aerating, overseed and fertilize with Milorganite®. It should take about 3-4 weeks for the lawn to recover and show signs of new growth.

It's best to dethatch during cooler weather. Mow the lawn to half its normal height right before dethatching. Postpone dethatching – even if it's needed – during times of drought, watering restrictions or intense heat waves. Avoid heavy dethatching in mid- to late fall for any kind of lawn.

Dethatching your lawn may be as simple as using a stiff spring-tined fan rake to remove an excessive layer of dead organic materal between the green of your grass and the soil.

The best time to dethatch your lawn is when it's actively growing and the soil is moderately moist. For cool-season grasses, that's early spring or early fall. For warm-season grasses, dethatch in late spring through early summer (after the second mowing). That's when your grass is growing most vigorously.

Try to mow your grass to around 1.5 inches for cool-season grass and as low as ¾ inch for warm-season grass. Any grass that sits at 2 inches and above will likely make it difficult to dethatch as the blades on your dethatcher might not penetrate deep enough. Remember the one-third rule!
